Can Brian Scalabrine Get Another NBA Gig?

Brian “White Mamba” Scalabrine is currently a free agent & it’s looking like he may not be in the NBA for his 12th season. Which is still quite impressive he’s made it this far, considering his isn’t the most athletic or talented guy, not to mention that he looks like a giant ginger dad from the suburbs. A true fan favorite, He’s been embraced by fans & teammates alike, but it’s hard for us to think of Scal seriously sometimes, with his almost naïve level of optimism, general appearance, & “Scal-a-Brine” chants. Scalabrine was pretty much viewed as a human victory cigar for Tom Thibodeau & usually played garbage time. Scalabrine also already has alternatives to playing in the NBA next year, with an offer from European team, a broadcast job in the wings & I’m sure Doc or Thibs would be happy to have him as an assistant (other than his acting gig). But he’s determined to play in the NBA next year as noted in Sam Smith’s excellent article:

“I’d be discouraged if I just quit,” said Scalabrine, who remains without an NBA team after being told by the Bulls he will not be invited to return. “Everyone keeps telling me it’s not quitting (taking an already offered TV job). But I want someone to tell me, ‘We don’t want you.’ I’ve always been a tough cut to make. I want someone to tell me I’m not good enough. I just want to see what happens.”

If he is determined to play next year, I actually think there are a number of teams that could benefit from him being on the squad. The same things that made Kevin Garnett say he was his best team mate ever or compelled Jason Kidd to thank Scal for all he’s done for the team haven’t gone anywhere. Scalabrine could still contribute to a team, perhaps not in a conventional way, but he still has a lot to offer. He is a match made in heaven for a big man who has all the physical abilities but lacks the effort & focus to be able to live up to their potential. The guy is practically made for a Jack Haley like role to someone else’s Rodman. Guys like DeMarcus Cousins, JaVale McGee, & even an established player like Andrew Bynum could learn a little bit from the White Mamba.

It may be hard for guys like that to completely buy into what a coach says, so bringing back Scal as a player isn’t crazy by any means, sometimes these guys need to hear it from their peers, not their bosses. I think maybe even the best fit for him might be somewhere like Denver (not only so I can continue the Scal-a-Brine chant) because I think that JaVale & Faried could both benefit from his mentoring. Faried sometimes plays with an almost chaotic level of energy & Scal could help with his development. But I think the best thing he could do is buddy up with a guy like JaVale (kind of like he did with Omer Asik) and get him to buy into the work ethic, focus & studying habits that’s necessary for him to become an allstar. Part of this is I think JaVale is more of a knucklehead (low basketball IQ, lacks focus) than a head case (bad attitude, selfish), if that makes any sense. Even if he can’t help in that way, to be honest, guys with bad attitudes & similar talent levels have already been signed by NBA teams.

I think former head coach Tom Thibodeau sums it up best in Sam’s article what the White Mamba can bring to the table:

“You don’t measure him in stats,” said Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, who added he is disappointed to lose Scalabrine. “He knows how to win; he helps you win. To me, he’s invaluable with what he brings to a team.”

If nothing else, he's got a REALLY great post game interview in him if you do win the title. I think the Rockets should pick him up just to get another power forward.

5 NBA Players You DON’T Want to Party With: Metta World Peace

Metta World Peace

You probably already knew this but, Ron Artest/Metta World Peace is pretty much crazy. I mean the dude saw another guy stab another dude to death with a table leg during a pickup game. Damn, say Queensbridge. One look at his twitter account & you can figure out pretty quick that this isn’t a dude you want to chill with. BUT, if you had to hang out with this guy he’d show up randomly at your house in the middle of the night, requesting an interview. While you are confused & still waking up, he’d come in & sit on your couch. You make the mistake of first calling him Ron, not Metta and no matter what you asked him, he’d just give his own crazy answers & find a way to plug his new song, Dancing with the stars, Low Rider magazine cover, basically whatever crazy thing he’s doing at the time ( something about an over sexed vampire Elder, WTF?). Without warning, he starts taking off his clothes (as pictured above) & performing stand-up comedy…? (that question mark is because it’s hard to call that comedy per se) Again, without warning, he transitions to a Canadian Weather Man & starts talking about true love in Canada. As suddenly as Ron Ron appeared he leaves, claiming he needs to crash a gallery opening of art about him. You see a speeding go kart shaped like an F1 race car fly by with Metta waving good bye with a jolly grin on his face. He leaves you wondering “Is this real life?”

Denver Is Better Than Alaska, Andre Iguodala

This was a big weekend for basketball, the Gold Medal winner was decided yesterday & the Dwightmare is officially over for at least for this year. (Pause for your celebration over not having to hear about the rumors & BS anymore.) Done celebrating yet? Good, but what you may have missed was the player’s reaction or non-reaction to the trades.

Dwight Howard: Happy/Relieved (ironic that he's relieved over something he created)

Andrew Bynum: Guarded (no public reaction)

Everyone other than Iggy, Dwight, or Bynum: Filed under “Who Cares?”

But what about Andre Iguodala’s reaction:

“Andre Iguodala told me in London that getting traded to Nuggets no better, no worse than trade to Alaska. Iggy lukewarm on Denver. At best.”

I get that Denver isn’t exactly a big market franchise or anything but ALASKA!!?? Come on Iggy, as a current Denver area resident & Nuggets fan, I have to say those are some harsh words. I know that you heard all about Glenn Rice having a good time but she’s not even governor anymore & I’m pretty sure that was a one time thing. Now I admit that I wasn’t the most excited to come to Denver at first too (it’s pretty awesome actually) but trust me there are PLEANTY of great reasons for you to look forward to the Denver area (over Philly & Alaska) and playing for the Nuggets, such as:

Carlos boozer is from Alaska, do you want to be lumped in with him?

It’s super sunny here (300 days of sun)

Not as cold as either location either

A Nugget, Alex English, was leading scorer of the 80’s not Magic or Bird

We promise not to call you Iggy

You may be a superstar in Alaska but hard for you to find a job that pays the same or offers same talent level.

No more disgusting Cheese Wiz in sandwiches

The BEST retro jersey’s of all time

People are leaving Philly faster than DETROIT. What does that tell you?

Finally done listening to Doug Collins tell the Olympic story over & over again

Two words: SKI BUNNIES

 No more constant trade rumors

A better fit: You are a great defender & good passer. The Nuggets don’t struggle on offensive end, your weakness, & like to play up tempo basketball. What team would be a better fit? The Alaska Quakes?

JaVale McGee should be cool to hang with or at least make things interesting

Our stalkers are WAY behind on their NBA News

Like I said the current Governor Sean Panell is not as hot & probably not interested (probably, unless you know something we don’t know Andre)

Quality time with Chauncey Billups in the off season, since he’s from the area.

We got DOUBLE RAINBOW, duh.

We won’t hold it against you if you want to smile or not

If your family comes to a game, we won’t beat them up, Philly can’t guarantee that.

We may boo you if you are REALLY bad but no matter how bad you are, we won’t lob batteries or other objects at you

No more Spencer Hawes political rants

Two more words: Medical Marijuana (Maybe that’s why are fans are less uptight & plain nasty. Where’s the love, City of Brotherly Love?)

What are some other good reasons Andre should be more excited to go to Denver? Maybe a reason he should still consider Alaska or miss Philly? Put them in the comments.

Dwight Howard Loyalty T-Shirt's Don't Have To Go To Waste

With just a little creative thinking, the Orlando Magic were able to still sell the D12 Loyalty shirts with just a very minor tweak. Crisis Averted.

5 NBA Players You DON’T Want to Party With: Tyler Hansborugh

Tyler Hansbrough

One guy you don’t want to hit the town with is Tyler Hansbrough. For some reason, he just has a way about him that makes him so dislikeable, even his team mates love to mess with him. (I’m in the same camp, I don’t know why. It’s like he Face is like a piñata since people want to hit it but its not as cool looking & doesn’t give you candy when you hit him. Though I imagine just as satisfying but I digress.)
Tyler insists on going to the bar to pick up on some chicks but doesn’t want to pay the bar prices so he sneaks in a 40 OZ. Security spots him & tries to kick him out, but his nickname is Psyco T for a reason. This guy is just too emotional & dramatic to not start a fight. Add that to the fact that he isn’t the strongest/most athletic guy, so he’s not going to be able to help you guys win the fight much.

After being trounced & kicked out of the bar, Tyler takes you back to his pad to recover from the ordeal. But as soon as you get to his house he starts to play Rock Band & keeps saying “just one more time” after every song. Tyler’s Psyco T comes out in him once again when he fails a level & smashes the guitar like Bluto in Animal House. After you get home, you come to find out the whole night was just a ruse to hold your dog for ransom, the jerk. (I guess our dislike is mutual, but the jokes on you Tyler. I don’t have a basement, HA!)

2012-2013 Magic Marketing Plan Outlook: Not So Good

The Orlando Magic are in the process of losing their Superstar & #1 attraction in Dwight Howard. You can tell things aren’t going well for the Magic when this is the pull to buy season tickets:

$11 per seat is REALLY cheap for season tickets so I have to think the Magic know how bad things are for them. Don’t worry, they also have J.J. Redick one of these to help them sell season tickets too, so they should be in good shape still ( Still upset over Ryan Anderson being traded, they say good die young James Clay). It’s easy to be all doom and gloom about this but let’s look at all the great upsides of buying season tickets:

  • Hedo Turkoglu will FINALLY be the #1 option. Who else is excited for this!? No, you don’t count, Hedo...

  • The Magic’s slogan next year will be “The Orlando Magic: Hey, At Least we aren’t the Bobcats”. Chip Bowers, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships & Marketing, has really earned his pay check on that one.

  • Great golf guys, plus Disney World, Universal Studios & Sea World didn’t get traded. Did I mention the golf? Great golf….just great...

  • Glen Davis may try to eat one of the rookies as a half time snack.

  • No Ticket price increase for rounds one & TWO in the playoffs (hahaha, they so adorable when they think they are getting into the playoffs let alone round two)

There gotta be even more upside than this to buying some AWESOME season tickets from the Orlando Magic & watching Big Baby put on a show. Leave your suggestions in the comments below, I dare ya.

5 Guys You Wanna Party with in the NBA: the perfect player for your perfect night out with DeAndre Jordan

DeAndre Jordan: Chill Bro

If your idea of a good evening is just kicking back, watching a movie, & maybe play some video games, DeAndre’s your man. He & Blake Griffin have developed quite a fondness for each other & know each other a little too well. Just imagine yourself as Blake. Sitting around watching SpongeBob Square Pants, playing a little NBA2K, just chillaxing like BFFFFFFFFFF’s do. If you do happen to win at 2K, he’s a good sport about losing & his facial expressions will be good for a laugh. DeAndre doesn’t take himself too seriously & can take a joke. If he is feeling down, just grab him some chicken & he’s back to himself in no time. Who knows you might get some work done too. If you hang around long enough, DeAndre is sure to introduce you to the fun lovin’ fam he’s got. Just be sure you can take a prank too especially if he invites you for a sleep over…

There are a lot of cool guys in the NBA. No matter what mood you are in, there would be an NBA player that would make your night out killer. Who would you want to hang out with most?
